Coffee

Coffee is the most popular drink in the world and is the commplace in every office known to man. The popular beverage is consumed for many reasons from caffeine to fuel the day to a social drink to chat with co-workers. The modern Dapper Gentleman should be knowlegable about conventional brews and have a good taste for them. The following will cover the basic types of coffee and how to brew your standard cup of joe. 

First it is importnat to understand the differences in coffee beans. The flavor, aroma, and color of the coffee depends on the style of roasting that the bean goes through. Roasting is a a process that heats the bean and releases the flavor and smell locked in the turning the coffee brown in color from green. Listed below are the four common roast categories. 

Light Roasts

Medium Roasts

Light Roasts roasted for a shorter amount of time compared to the more common dark roasts. The lower heating results in a lighter color and a milder flavor. Some common roast include the Cinnamon Roast and the New England Roast.

The medium roasts are the more preferred among the majority of Americans and is sometimes referred to as the American Roast. As the name suggests the medium roast are cooked for slightly longer than the previous beans and this leads to a slightly heavier taste. Types include City Roast American Roast, and Breakfast Roast.

Medium Dark Roasts

Medium Dark Roasts are once again darker and fuller in flavor and aroma. They offer a bittersweet aftertaste with hints of carmel. Popular mediums dark roasts include Full City Roast. 

Dark Roast

Dark Roasts are the fullest in body and flavor with a strong bitterness at the end of each drink. They can vary from dark brown in color to charred black. Types of Dark Roasts include French Roast, Italian Roast, European Roast, and New Orleans Roast. 

How to Brew Coffee

There are numerous ways to brew coffee including, but not limited to: Drip System, French Press, Espresso, Cappucino, and Iced Coffee. There are countless ways to enjoy a cup of brew, but the following will cover the most commonly found method in the work place; the drip coffee pot. While there are differences in every coffee machine, there are five basic steps to brewing a good cup of joe. Clean the coffee pot, grind the coffee or purchase pre-ground beans, insert coffee filter and beans, pour in water, allow water to filter through coffee and serve. 

Equipment

In order to brew a cup of coffee you will need: 

  • Ground Coffee or coffee beans to be ground

  • Water (filtered is preferred for flavor)

  • Coffee Maker

  • Coffee Filter

  • Coffee Extras (milk, sugar, creamer, etc.)

Steps to Brew Coffee in a Drip Pot

1. First, make sure the coffee pot is free of any old coffee or other debris. Remove the pot from the coffee machine and rinse with soap and water. 

 

2. Prepare coffee beans to be placed in the machine. Coffee beans can be sold as whole beans or pre-ground. Whole beans must be processed in a blender or grinder to release flavor. 

 

3. Place the coffee filter in the top of the coffee machine and fill with 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounch serving. 

 

4. Fill the coffee pot with the desired number of servings of water and pout the water in the top of the coffee machine in the water reservoir to be heated and dripped through the coffee and the filter. 

 

5. Coffee is ready when the water has finished filtering through the grounds. Grab a mug and enjoy! 

Sandwiches 101

The staple of lunches in any setting has long been the simple and tasteful sandwich. Sandwiches can come in all shapes and sizes that can be tailored to anyone's tastes'. As a Dapper Gentleman it is important to know how to craft a proper sandwich and more than just the typical bologna and cheese. From subs to paninis to melts sandwiches are prepared in different fashions but consist of the same basic elements: meat, cheese, condiments, and vegetables. The following will outline the main choices when constructing the proper sandwich. As with all things food related not every person has the same taste, so experimentation is recommended to perfect one's sandwich making skills. 

Bread

The base of the sandwich and very important, the bread can come in many shapes and sizes. Breads have many different styles and forms like the regular loaf, subs, pitas, buns, rolls and many more. Breads will always differ. 

Meats

The heart and soul of any meal. Meat is the key ingredient to a good sandwich. These can include, but are not limited to: bologna, turkey, ham, salami, and more.

Extras

To pair with the chosen meat in a multitude extras such as condiments, cheese, and vegetables. When it comes to these, one can pick anything that suits their taste. Here are some typical favorites that are good to try.

Cheeses: American, provolone, cheddar, pepper jack.

Condiments: Mayo, mustard, relish, ranch. 

When it comes to veggies, lettuce and tomato are popular, but there is no limit to what you can make. Remember to try new things and find what works for you.
